Why You Should Not Eat Too Much Avocado?
Anything more than needed is unhealthy.
Avocado is also known as alligator-pear, aguacate, avocado pear.
It is considered a superfood given its high content of nutrients. The fruit’s popularity exploded in recent years as more health benefits came to light.
Some advantages of Avocado
- Naturally, avocados have high-fat content and low carbohydrates. But the fats present in avocado are monounsaturated fatty acids or good fat. This helps to cut excess cholesterol and protects against heart diseases.
- The abundant fats and dietary fibers in avocados give the feeling of satiety. The tendency to overeat is reduced. It helps to burn more calories, regulate weight and appetite.
- Bananas are noted for their potassium and magnesium content. But avocados have even higher amounts of this element. Potassium helps in nerve and muscles contraction and regulation of heartbeats. It also prevents some toxic effects of Sodium.
- Avocado is an excellent source of energy. A single avocado, depending on its size carries 322 calories. Its rich calorie content is based on the healthy fat it contains.
- It is also a rich source of vitamins needed in trace amounts by our body. Avocados contain vitamin C, E, K, and B6, as well as riboflavin, niacin, folate, and pantothenic acid.
There’s no doubt that avocados impart many health benefits when consumed optimally. But with all the benefits a tendency to overeat this fruit is obvious. Even the sun has dark spots and this variety of food also comes with some detrimental effects.
Some lesser-known disadvantages of Avocado
- They are too high in calories. As you guessed, consumption of avocados can help you get fat. 100 grams of avocado liberate 160 calories compared to 130 in rice.
- Avocados contain polyols (sugar alcohols). These small-chain carbohydrates cause different gastrointestinal symptoms like flatulence, bloating, and discomfort. They also have laxative-like effects. Avocado increases the symptoms of latex intolerance in around half of all people with latex allergies. This is because some of the proteins in latex that cause allergy are also present in avocados. Allergic reactions are also induced by eating bananas, chestnuts, kiwifruit, passion fruit, and plums. The IgE antibodies in the blood react with latex proteins to bring such reactions.
- Studies show compounds in avocados interact with blood-thinning medicines. Warfarin (Coumadin) is used as a blood thinner (slow down blood clotting). Avocados might thus decrease the effectiveness of warfarin and increase blood clotting risks.
- Avocado contains two components- estragole and anethole, which can cause damage to the liver cells. Also, avocado in excess can interfere with anti-inflammatory medications.
- Beta-sitosterol content in Avocado might absorb necessary cholesterol from the body. In rare cases, cholesterol deficiency might occur.
Every edible thing is harmful in excess, and even Avocado isn’t spared.
It’s important to keep a balance on how much avocado should be eaten per day. It depends on lifestyle, diet, and health conditions.
